Churchill's connection to Guernsey is more pointed than most commemorative issuers acknowledge: it was Churchill who, in 1940, made the decision not to defend the Channel Islands, withdrawing British forces and leaving the population to five years of German occupation. Guernsey striking a Churchill coin is, depending on one's view, either a generous historical reconciliation or an irony the catalog should note.
