Churchill's connection to Guernsey is more than ceremonial. As Prime Minister, he made the agonizing decision in June 1940 not to defend the Channel Islands against German occupation — a calculated sacrifice that left Guernsey under Nazi control for nearly five years, the only British territory to suffer that fate. The islanders have had a complicated relationship with that decision ever since.
