The portrait features fine naturalistic detail in the hair and facial features, rendered in the contemporary style adopted for the first coinage of Charles III's reign. The circular Latin legend reads CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 5 POUNDS · 2023, interrupted at the lower field by the denomination and date, with the engraver's initials MJ incuse below the truncation of the bust.
