The Lion and the Eagle pairing references the heraldic relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, a theme the Royal Mint has returned to periodically for the American collector market. This 2023 issue was produced as part of a broader series commissioned under Charles III's first full year of regal coinage, following the formal proclamation period after Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
The Royal Mint struck relatively few .999 fine silver proofs in this format before transitioning some series lines in late 2023. Mintage figures for individual proof issues in this series were capped by subscriber allocation.
