The Churchill £5 was issued in 2023 as a commemorative circulation note marking the fiftieth anniversary of Churchill's death — though that milestone actually fell in 2015, making the timing more closely tied to the broader royal transition following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022. This was among the first Bank of England notes to carry Charles III's portrait, part of a phased introduction rather than an immediate reissue of the entire series.

De La Rue's Gateshead facility has handled Bank of England polymer production since the substrate shift began with the 2016 Churchill fiver — meaning this note is, in a sense, a second print run of the same design with a new monarch's profile substituted on the obverse.
