The Queen Mother piedfort revisits a commemorative tradition the Royal Mint has sustained across multiple reigns — the original five-pound crown honoring Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon has been restruck and repackaged repeatedly since her centenary issue in 2000. Piedforts of this type carry exactly double the standard flan thickness, a format with roots in French mint proofing practice dating to the 16th century, when they were struck as presentation pieces for assay verification rather than circulation.
