Princess Anne received the Princess Royal title in 1987, the second woman ever granted it — the first being the future Queen Anne in 1693. This piedfort, struck at twice the standard planchet thickness using the same dies as the base issue, follows a format the Royal Mint revived in 1982 after a gap of several centuries. Pieforts were historically produced as presentation pieces for foreign dignitaries and die inspectors, never intended for circulation.
