| 表面の説明 | Uncrowned effigy of His Majesty King Charles III facing left, modelled by Martin Jennings, with the engraver's initials MJ visible below the truncation. The circular legend reads CHARLES III·D·G·REX·F·D·5 POUNDS·2023, separated by raised dots, running around the periphery of the field. The portrait presents the King in a naturalistic, contemporary style without crown or diadem, consistent with the standard definitive effigy adopted for the reign. |

Mary Seacole spent years petitioning the British War Office for permission to serve as a nurse during the Crimean War and was refused every time. She funded her own passage to the front and built the "British Hotel" near Balaclava herself, treating wounded soldiers of both sides at personal financial ruin. She died in 1881 nearly destitute despite her wartime reputation, and a public subscription fund had to be raised twice during her lifetime just to keep her solvent.
The piedfort format — double the standard coin thickness — has been used by the Royal Mint for special issues since the 1980s revival of a medieval striking tradition.
