Alderney, a Crown dependency lying closer to the Normandy coast than to England, has a particular claim to D-Day commemoration that most issuing authorities lack — the island's entire civilian population was evacuated in June 1940 and spent five years under German occupation. The liberation of the Channel Islands in May 1945 came nearly a year after the Normandy landings the islanders could not witness.
