The 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings fell in June 2024, drawing the largest gathering of world leaders at the commemorative site in years — including a notably frail Joe Biden, whose attendance dominated international coverage more than the landings themselves. The Royal Mint has issued D-Day commemoratives at various intervals since the 50th anniversary, each successive release competing with the last for collector attention in an increasingly crowded commemorative market.
KM# 1999 is among the first major British commemorative series issued under Charles III's effigy by Jody Clark, whose portrait replaced the long-running Maklouf and then Rank-Broadley designs following the Queen's death in September 2022.
