Guernsey's role in the Battle of Britain was that of victim, not participant — the island was bombed by the Luftwaffe on 28 June 1940, killing 34 civilians, and fell under German occupation four days later. It remained occupied until May 1945, the only British territory to endure the full duration of Nazi rule. The RAF squadrons commemorated by issues like this one were, from the Guernsey perspective, fighting a battle visible only as distant contrails before the island went dark.
