Guernsey occupied an unusual position during the Battle of Britain: the only British territory under German occupation for the duration of the war, its population lived under Nazi administration from June 1940 while RAF Fighter Command fought overhead. The island had been demilitarised and evacuated of many residents just before the fall. That Guernsey now issues commemoratives on this subject carries a particular irony that most issuers of similar coins cannot claim.
