Obverse description The left panel carries a vertical guilloche border interspersed with ornate medallions and the Bank's armorial seal at centre. The upper register bears two allegorical vignettes flanking a central crown device, with the denomination FIVE in dark cartouches at either side and the place and date of issue EDINBURGH 20 SEPTEMBER 1961 to the right. The lower register carries the full Bank title BANK OF SCOTLAND in bold letterpress, the promise-to-pay text in script, the serial number, and two Governor and Treasurer signatures above the denomination £5 at lower left and right, with a scroll at foot reading CONSTITUTED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT 1695.
