Obverse description The upper portion carries the Bank of Scotland royal arms vignette at centre, flanked by the denomination FIVE in decorative panels at left and right, with the date and place of issue (Edinburgh) printed above the serial number. A large guilloche medallion occupies the left border. The main text panel bears the full promise-to-pay legend in copperplate script over a blue oval underprint, with the denomination £5 in bold at lower left and right, and two manuscript signatures of the Governor and Treasurer above the founding act reference at the foot.
