The upper register presents the denomination FIVE in dark cartouches at left and right, flanking a central vignette of the Bank of Scotland heraldic arms supported by two figures, with the place and date of issue to the right. The lower register carries the bank title BANK OF SCOTLAND in bold letterpress, followed by the promise-to-pay text in italic script, £5 denomination panels at lower left and right, a manuscript Secretary's signature, and a reference to the founding Act of Parliament of 1695, with the Scottish arms vignette anchoring the far left margin. |

Waterston & Sons were primarily a Edinburgh stationery and printing firm — their work on Bank of Scotland notes across this period represents one of the longer domestic printing relationships in Scottish banking, unusual at a time when London security printers dominated most comparable commissions.
