Anwar Sadat was assassinated on 6 October 1981 while reviewing a military parade marking the eighth anniversary of the October War — shot by soldiers from his own army who opposed the 1979 peace treaty with Israel. Egypt issued commemorative gold in his honor for decades afterward, a pointed irony given that the treaty cost him his life but eventually earned Egypt the return of the Sinai Peninsula.
The .875 fineness places this squarely in the older Egyptian crown gold tradition rather than the .999 fine issues that dominate modern commemorative programs.
