Egypt hosted the 1986 African Cup of Nations — the tournament formally known at the time as the African Soccer Championship — and won it, defeating Cameroon on penalties in the final held in Cairo. It was the country's fourth continental title and the first hosted on home soil since 1959. This coin was issued to mark that double occasion.
