Obverse description The Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms, set within a circular medallion on a scrollwork cartouche, occupies the left field, flanked by guilloche ornament and corner numeral '5' devices. The central field carries the treasury promise text in copperplate script, with a crown vignette positioned between the two serial number panels at upper centre. A guilloche oval cartouche at lower centre bears the letterpress legend 'FIVE', above the facsimile signatures of the Assistant Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury.

The denomination appears in guilloche cartouches both above and below the central vignette, with a mosaic underprint of repeated numeral '5' filling the note's background field.
