Aversbeschreibung At center, a solar disk representing the god Amun-Ra, flanked symmetrically by a vulture with spread wings on the left and a cobra on the right, both drawn from the iconographic tradition of Ancient Egypt. The legend in Arabic naskh script arcs along the upper periphery reading 'Republic of Egypt' and along the lower periphery reading 'Five Pounds', with the Hijri and Gregorian dual date '1374-1955' appearing in the lower field. The overall design is executed in a formal, heraldic style evoking pharaonic symbolism within a modern republican context.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse depicts a dynamic scene of an ancient Egyptian war chariot in full gallop, with the Pharaoh Ramses II standing in the chariot drawing a bow, evoking the Battle of Kadesh. The composition is rendered in high relief with fine engraved detail characteristic of Egyptian commemorative gold issues of the period. A bold Arabic legend in naskh script arcs across the upper field reading 'Revolution of 23 July 1952', commemorating the Egyptian Revolution that overthrew the monarchy. The coin was struck in two variants: one in yellow gold and one in red gold, distinguishing this issue as particularly collectible. The exergue area is clear of inscriptions, allowing the figural scene to dominate the reverse field.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Issued to commemorate the third and fourth anniversaries of the Free Officers' coup that deposed King Farouk on 23 July 1952, this heavyweight gold piece was produced under Naguib's successor, Gamal Abdel Nasser, who had consolidated power by late 1954 after placing Naguib under house arrest. The mintage was intentionally limited — these were prestige issues, not circulation strikes, produced at a moment when Egypt was aggressively projecting a new national identity ahead of the Suez Crisis.

The .875 fineness follows the traditional Egyptian gold standard inherited from the monarchy, unchanged despite the revolution's rhetoric of rupture with the old order.
