| Obverse description | The obverse is executed in intaglio on white paper and carries the bank title 'Durban Bank' in large ornate script across the upper centre, flanked by a small vignette at upper left of a standing figure and a rosette numeral '5' medallion at upper right. A central harbour vignette shows a sailing vessel at quay, below which the promise text runs in copperplate script across the face; the denomination 'Five' appears in large gothic letters at lower left, with serial numbers in two tablet panels and a circular 'Durban Bank / Hartley & Co. / Natal' handstamp at left. The date 'Nov 3rd 1862, Durban, Nov 3rd 1862' is hand-inscribed, with manuscript signatures at lower right. |
