| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the Sudanese state emblem, depicting a secretary bird with wings spread, standing upon a shield charged with a traditional sailing vessel (Nile dhow), the whole flanked by two stylised palm branches tied at the base. A scroll below the bird bears the Arabic inscription of the Republic of Sudan. Flanking the central emblem are large Arabic numerals and inscription denoting the denomination (5 Pounds / 5 جنيهات) to the left and right. The lower arc of the field carries the Latin legend ISLAMIC WORLD 15TH CENTURY, with the Gregorian date 1979 and the Hijri date 1400 flanking the word SUDAN. A fine milled border runs around the entire circumference. |

The 1979 Sudanese essais were produced as trial strikes to evaluate proposed designs and materials ahead of confirmed production runs — aluminium being tested here almost certainly for its low cost relative to the inflationary pressures Sudan was navigating in the late 1970s. The 15th Hijri Century commemorative theme marks the Islamic calendar's turn of a century, 1400 AH falling in 1979–1980 CE, which prompted several Muslim-majority states to issue commemorative coinage around this date.
Essais of this type typically exist in very small numbers, distributed among central bank archives and a handful of proof sets that reached the collector market through official channels.
