The Regeering der Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek — the Government of the ZAR, distinct from the earlier De Nationale Bank notes — issued this 5 Pond during the final, desperate phase of the Anglo-Boer War. By 1902 the Staatsdrukkerij in Pretoria had long since fallen to British forces; notes of this series were printed under field conditions as the Boer government operated on the run, and the print quality reflects that.
The war ended in May 1902 with the Treaty of Vereeniging. Notes issued that year were never redeemable in any practical sense, and most survivors owe their existence to collectors rather than to any orderly withdrawal from circulation.
