The Staatsdrukkerij — the State Press in Pretoria — was still operating under siege conditions when notes of this series were produced. By 1902 the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek had ceased to exist as a functioning government; the Peace of Vereeniging was signed in May of that year, ending the Anglo-Boer War and extinguishing the Republic entirely. Any note bearing a 1902 date from this issuer was produced in the final, desperate phase of the war, when Boer forces were conducting guerrilla operations and the Pretoria administration had effectively collapsed.
Few circulated in any meaningful commercial sense. Most survivors show either heavy handling from field use or near-pristine condition from having never reached circulation at all.
