| 背面描述 | A left-facing, unadorned bust of President Ferdinand E. Marcos is depicted in high relief at the center of the field, rendered in a realistic portrait style with fine hair detailing and a plain collar. The date SETYEMBRE 21, 1972 is inscribed to the left of the portrait in the field, commemorating the declaration of martial law. The legend ANG BAGONG LIPUNAN arcs prominently along the upper border, while PANGULONG FERDINAND E. MARCOS curves along the lower portion of the field beneath the bust, with the year of issue appearing at the very bottom, all enclosed within a beaded border punctuated by two five-pointed stars. |

Introduced under the Marcos administration's "Ang Bagong Lipunan" (New Society) coinage reform of 1975, this series replaced the earlier Central Bank issues as part of a broader effort to redenominate Philippine national identity through currency. The 5 Piso was the highest denomination struck in the circulating series at the time — a significant face value that kept most examples from heavy everyday use.
The nickel composition was a deliberate departure from the silver 5-peso pieces of earlier decades. By the late 1970s, silver had long since priced itself out of circulation coinage globally, and the Philippines followed suit.
