Pakistan decimalized its currency in 1961, replacing the anna-based system inherited from British India with a straightforward 100 pice to the rupee. This 5 pice was among the first issues of the new decimal coinage, struck as the country's monetary administration worked through the practical chaos of retiring old denominations while flooding circulation with the new ones. The transition was administratively demanding enough that some earlier non-decimal types remained in circulation alongside the new series well into the mid-1960s.
