The 1945 Syrian 5 Piastres note was issued during the final, turbulent months of the French Mandate — French forces were still present, and Syria would not gain full independence until April 1946. The Banque de Syrie et du Liban, a French-controlled institution, remained the de facto currency authority, meaning Syrian Republic branding on notes from this period reflects a political aspiration as much as an administrative reality.
The 56B designation distinguishes it from the closely related 56A by signature variety — a detail that matters more to specialists than the modest face value suggests.
