5 South Sudanese Piasters

South Sudan's first currency issue, released following the July 2011 independence referendum, made the newly formed Bank of South Sudan one of the youngest central banks on the continent to commission a full banknote series. De La Rue produced the notes under considerable time pressure — the independence timeline was formally confirmed only in early 2011, leaving a narrow window to design, engrave, and deliver a functional currency before the July 9 proclamation date.

The piaster denominations were phased out of practical use almost immediately, rendered functionally worthless by inflation within a few years of issue. P#1 is a first-issue note from a state that barely survived its own infancy.
