A.G.F. Chemische Produkte was among the German industrial firms that issued zinc notgeld tokens during the severe small-change shortages of World War I and its immediate aftermath, when the withdrawal of silver and copper coinage from circulation left factories and businesses unable to make change for their workers. These private issues were tolerated rather than sanctioned, and most were redeemed and melted once municipal and state token programs caught up with demand — which explains why survivors in collectible condition are more common than the original circulation numbers might suggest.
