Haynau, a small Silesian linen-trading town, saw its local newspaper — the Haynauer Stadtblatt — step into currency production during the notgeld emergency of World War I, when the German Reich's small-denomination coinage essentially evaporated from circulation as metal was commandeered for the war effort. Newspapers issuing their own emergency pfennig tokens was not unique to Haynau, but it underscores how thoroughly the coinage system had broken down at the municipal level by mid-war.
