Vereinigte Spiegel Fabriken — United Mirror Factories — was one of the dominant forces in Fürth's glass and mirror industry, a trade that had made the Bavarian city Europe's leading mirror producer since the 17th century. This zinc notgeld piece dates to the emergency currency period following World War I, when metal and coin shortages forced German municipalities and private firms alike to issue their own small-denomination tokens to keep commerce moving at the factory and shop floor level.
