Gebr. Knipping was a major manufacturer of notgeld tokens, producing emergency coinage for numerous industrial firms during the material shortages of World War I. The "Abt. Deutsch-Lux." designation refers to the Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG, a massive Ruhr-based steel and mining conglomerate that operated facilities in Altena and relied on small-denomination tokens to pay workers when official coinage disappeared from circulation entirely after 1916.
Zinc was the default substitute once copper and nickel were redirected to munitions production.
