Issued in 1919 by the Stettiner Oelwerke Actien-Gesellschaft, an oil-processing works in Züllchow on the outskirts of Stettin, this is a piece of Notgeld — emergency coinage produced by private firms, municipalities, and institutions when the postwar German economy failed to supply enough small-denomination coins for everyday commercial use. The central government's inability to meet demand for low-value currency pushed hundreds of industrial employers to mint their own factory tokens, primarily to make change in company canteens and on-site shops.
Zinc was the default material for such issues; copper and nickel were still constrained by wartime procurement controls lingering into 1919.
