Zirndorf issued this notgeld piece in 1917, the third year of a war that had drained Germany's nickel and copper reserves so thoroughly that the imperial government had already begun requisitioning coinage. Municipal authorities across Bavaria scrambled to fill the resulting small-change vacuum with locally authorized substitutes. Zirndorf, a small town southwest of Nuremberg best known then as now for its toy industry, was among hundreds of communities that struck their own emergency issues rather than watch everyday commerce grind to a halt.
The nickel-plated zinc composition is itself a material record of wartime compromise.
