Wüstewaltersdorf, a weaving village in Silesia, became one of the more prolific issuers of Notgeld during the early 1920s as the German monetary system buckled under postwar inflation. Websky, Hartmann & Wiesen — a textile manufacturer rather than any monetary authority — issued these zinc pieces primarily to pay workers in fractional amounts when official coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Factory-issued Notgeld of this kind was redeemable only at company stores or against wages, a closed loop that kept the firm's own liquidity intact.
