Wemding issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917, when the Imperial German war economy had stripped copper and nickel from civilian coinage almost entirely. Small municipalities across Bavaria were left to organize their own emergency fractional currency, and Wemding — a market town in the Donau-Ries district with a population well under five thousand — was among hundreds forced to do exactly that. Zinc was the material of last resort: cheap, abundant, and deeply unpopular with the public for its tendency to corrode in pocket wear.
