Unter-Peissenberg was a coal-mining community in Upper Bavaria, and this 1917 Notgeld issue reflects the acute metal shortages that forced hundreds of German municipalities to produce their own emergency coinage during the war. Zinc was one of the few base metals not entirely monopolized by weapons production, making it the material of last resort for small-denomination local issues. Funck 557.1 distinguishes this from at least one variant, suggesting the Gemeinde issued more than a single die pairing before the need passed.
