Additional information

Pößneck's 1919 iron notgeld issue belongs to the wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany following the collapse of the imperial government and the near-total disappearance of small change from circulation. Pfennig coins in base metals had been hoarded or melted throughout the war years, and by the armistice the gap between denominations in everyday commerce was acute. Hundreds of German towns issued their own stopgap pieces in whatever materials were locally available — iron being among the cheapest and most accessible.

The Funck 427.2 designation places this as a distinct die variety within the Pößneck series.
