Porz am Rhein's Spiegelglaswerke Germania was one of the Rhineland's significant mirror and plate glass manufacturers, and like hundreds of German industrial firms during the First World War emergency coinage period, it issued its own zinc Notgeld to compensate for the near-total disappearance of small state coinage from circulation. Federal copper and nickel had been pulled for war production, leaving factory workers with no practical way to make small purchases at company canteens and local shops.
The Menzel reference numbers suggest this piece is catalogued under both the 2005 and 2018 editions — a minor classification discrepancy not uncommon in corporate Notgeld, where attribution between issuer and municipality was frequently disputed by later cataloguers.
