Obverse description Central field features a stylized oak sapling with spreading branches and roots, a motif symbolic of German national identity. The circumferential legend BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER runs along the upper portion of the rim in raised Latin lettering. The date 1949 appears at the bottom of the legend, flanked by small decorative stops. The coin bears a hole punched at the top, indicating its use as a pattern or trial piece subject to testing. The overall design is deeply struck with bold relief typical of early Federal Republic pattern coinage.
