Neumarkt in Silesia — today Środa Śląska in Poland — issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917 as metal shortages stripped German municipalities of their coin supply. The Imperial government had requisitioned copper and nickel for war production, leaving local savings banks to fill the gap with whatever materials remained available. Zinc was the last resort.
The Stadtsparkasse, a municipal savings institution rather than a commercial bank, had no minting authority under normal circumstances. Emergency legislation passed in 1916 effectively delegated that responsibility downward.
