Obverse description The obverse features an outer pearl border encircling a raised circular beaded ring, within which the numeral '5' appears prominently in the center of the field. The issuer's name 'R. OLDENBOURG' arcs across the upper portion of the legend between the pearl border and the inner beaded circle, while 'MÜNCHEN' curves along the lower arc, both separated by small six-pointed star ornaments. The overall design is plain and utilitarian, consistent with German Notgeld emergency coinage of the World War I era.

Additional information

R. Oldenbourg was a Munich-based printing and publishing house, founded in 1858, that issued emergency small-change tokens during the acute coin shortages of World War I. German municipalities and private firms alike resorted to Kriegsgeld and Notgeld when the imperial government's hoarding of copper and nickel for munitions production pulled virtually all small denominations from circulation by 1916. Zinc, the fallback material, produced notoriously brittle and poorly struck pieces.
