Obverse description The large numeral '5' occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded border, reading 'Tonwerk Moosburg' in the upper arc and 'A. & M. Ostenrieder' in the lower arc, with two five-pointed stars serving as separators. The design is plain and utilitarian, typical of German Notgeld emergency coinage of the early Weimar period.

Additional information

Tonwerk A. & M. Ostenrieder was a brickworks and ceramics operation in Moosburg an der Isar, Bavaria — one of hundreds of German industrial firms that issued private emergency coinage (Kriegsgeld) during World War I when the imperial government's small-denomination coins vanished from circulation, hoarded by a civilian population that correctly anticipated worse to come. Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had gone to the military.

These factory-issued pieces circulated exclusively among workers and in company-adjacent commerce, redeemable only within a narrow local orbit.
