Additional information

Meuselwitz, in Thuringian Saxony, sat atop one of Germany's more productive brown coal seams, and the Prehlitzgrube was among the collieries operating there during the period when labor shortages and wartime metal restrictions made private emergency coinage — Lagergeld or works tokens — a practical necessity. These zinc pieces circulated exclusively within the mine's own wage and canteen economy, never entering general commerce.
