Grusonwerk began as an independent iron foundry under Hermann Gruson before Krupp absorbed it in 1893, folding it into the broader armaments empire that supplied both sides of multiple European conflicts with steel plate and artillery components. Factory token coinage of this type was issued to control wages within company-controlled canteens and shops — a system that kept worker spending tethered to the employer and was eventually curtailed by Weimar-era labor reforms.

Zinc was the practical choice for low-denomination tokens, cheap to strike and difficult to counterfeit convincingly at scale.
