| 表面の銘文 | STADT LANDAU PFALZ 5 19★17 |
| 裏面の説明 | Within a raised pearl border following the octagonal flan, the circular legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE (small change substitute token) arcs around the upper periphery of a central rope circle, enclosing the large numeral 5 prominently in the central field. Three six-pointed star ornaments are evenly spaced at the lower portion of the legend outside the rope circle, serving as decorative separators. The overall design is stark and functional, characteristic of wartime German municipal notgeld issues. |

Landau's 1917 zinc notgeld emerged from the same supply crisis that gutted Germany's copper and nickel reserves mid-war, forcing hundreds of municipalities to issue their own emergency coinage. Landau in der Pfalz, a former fortress town that had passed between French and German hands repeatedly since Louis XIV's engineers enclosed it in 1688, was among the smaller Palatinate communities compelled to fill the void left by vanishing imperial small change.
The Funck reference places this as variety .4, indicating at least four die or production variants were catalogued for this type alone.
