Opmerkingen

Ettal Abbey's estate administration — the Klostergutsverwaltung — issued this note during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany from 1916 onward, when hoarding drained copper and nickel coins from circulation entirely. Thousands of local German authorities, municipalities, and private enterprises resorted to Notgeld, but monastic issuers were comparatively rare. Himmer's Augsburg press was a natural choice for Bavarian clients; the firm had deep roots in regional ecclesiastical printing well before the war.
