| Obverse description | Central field displays the municipal coat of arms of Kempen, depicting a heraldic shield bearing a coiled serpent, surmounted by a crowned lion crest upon a mantled helm. The shield is flanked by decorative scrollwork supporters. The circular legend STADTGEMEINDE around the upper periphery and KEMPEN I/P along the lower portion is separated by star ornaments. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border running the full circumference of the coin. |

Kempen in Posen — today Kępno in western Poland — issued zinc notgeld during the First World War when the imperial German government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production, forcing municipalities to produce their own emergency coinage. Zinc was the compromise material: abundant, cheap, and deeply unpopular with the public, who found it corroded quickly in pocket humidity. Most surviving examples show exactly that.
