Notgeld tokens issued by private industrial firms during and after World War I reflect the near-total breakdown of small-denomination coinage in Germany, as wartime metal requisitioning stripped circulation of copper and nickel. The Karlstadt am Main cement works would have issued this piece primarily to pay and retain its own labor force, functioning as scrip redeemable at company-affiliated vendors rather than as general currency. Iron was the material of necessity — most private notgeld issuers had no better options after 1916.
