Karlstadt am Main issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917, when the Imperial German war economy had stripped copper and nickel from civilian coinage with increasing urgency. Zinc was the fallback for dozens of municipalities forced to provision their own small change after the Reichsbank's centralized supply collapsed under wartime demand. Karlstadt's issue is catalogued under Funck 233.1, placing it firmly among the smaller Franconian town emissions rather than the better-documented urban series.
