| Reverse description | Central field displays the large numeral '5' enclosed within a twisted rope or cable inner circle. The circular legend 'KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE' arcs across the upper portion of the field, identifying the piece as a small-change substitute token. Three star ornaments appear in the lower portion of the field. The rim is bordered by a continuous ring of raised dots, mirroring the obverse treatment and characteristic of German wartime Notgeld issues. |

Hohenwestedt is a small market town in Schleswig-Holstein, and this zinc piece is a product of the Notgeld emergency coinage wave that swept Germany during and after World War I, when chronic metal shortages and hoarding stripped small denominations from everyday commerce. Local credit associations — Creditvereine — stepped into the vacuum, issuing their own token coinage backed by nothing more than community trust and the expectation of eventual redemption.
Zinc was the material of last resort, corroding readily in circulation and difficult to strike cleanly.
